MOV to MP4 Converter

The MOV format was developed by Apple in 1998 as part of their QuickTime framework, predating the MP4 format by several years.

While both formats can use similar codecs internally, MOV was primarily designed for Apple's ecosystem.

Interestingly, MOV files can actually contain MP4 content, as both are based on the same underlying MPEG-4 Part 14 container specification.

Despite MP4's widespread adoption, MOV remains the preferred format in professional video editing environments like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere.

This is due to MOV's superior handling of alpha channels and higher bit-depth color information.

Converting MOV to MP4 is primarily a container-switching operation rather than a full re-encoding process when both use compatible codecs.

The conversion involves extracting the audio and video streams from the MOV container and repackaging them into the MP4 container format.

This process, known as "remuxing," preserves the original quality since no re-encoding occurs.

Complications arise when MOV files use Apple-specific codecs like ProRes or contain features unsupported in MP4, such as multiple audio tracks or chapter markers.

In these cases, transcoding becomes necessary, where the video is decoded and then re-encoded using MP4-compatible codecs like H.264.
