MKV to MP4 Converter

The MKV (Matroska Video) format was created in 2002 as an open-source alternative to proprietary container formats. Its name comes from the Russian nesting doll "Matryoshka," reflecting how it can contain multiple types of media in a single file.

Unlike MP4, MKV can store multiple audio tracks, subtitle streams, and even entire chapter structures, making it popular for storing multi-language films and TV shows.

Interestingly, while MKV offers superior technical capabilities, Hollywood studios and streaming services predominantly use MP4 due to its universal compatibility.

The MP4 format's dominance stems from its adoption by Apple for iTunes in 2001, which helped establish it as the de facto standard for digital video distribution.

Converting MKV to MP4 is primarily a container-switching operation rather than re-encoding when both use compatible codecs like H.264.

The process involves demuxing (extracting) the video, audio, and subtitle streams from the MKV container, then remuxing them into the MP4 container format.

Complications arise when MKV contains codecs not supported by MP4, such as FLAC audio or VP9 video, requiring transcoding these streams to AAC audio or H.264 video respectively.

Modern converters use stream copying (often called "fast copy" or "remuxing") whenever possible to avoid quality loss and speed up conversion.

The technical challenge lies in handling MKV's extensive metadata capabilities, as MP4 has more limited support for features like chapter markers and embedded fonts for subtitles.
