WMA: Proprietary Format, Not Accepted by Apple

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a lossy codec developed by Microsoft. It plays natively in Windows Media Player, Xbox, and other Windows-based applications. Apple's entire audio stack, including iTunes, Apple Music, the iOS Music app, and Core Audio, does not include a WMA decoder. Dragging a WMA file into Apple Music produces an error. WMA files exported from Windows Media Player, ripped from CDs on Windows, or downloaded from Zune cannot enter the Apple ecosystem without conversion.

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container used throughout Apple's ecosystem. Every track purchased from the iTunes Store, every Apple Music stream saved for offline listening, every iPhone Voice Memo, and every GarageBand export is stored as M4A. The container holds AAC audio by default, or ALAC for Apple Music Lossless tracks. iTunes and Apple Music import M4A natively with full metadata support. Quality: What the WMA-to-M4A Conversion Preserves

WMA is a lossy format, and converting to M4A (AAC) applies a second lossy encoding pass on top of the original WMA compression. The quality ceiling is set by the original WMA encoding; the AAC pass introduces an additional, small degradation. At a high AAC output bitrate (256 kbps or above), the second-pass quality loss is minimal and typically undetectable in normal listening. At lower bitrates, artefacts may be more noticeable on complex musical content. Keep the original WMA files; you cannot reconstruct the WMA-encoded audio from the M4A output.

For WMA sources, converting to M4A (AAC) is the practical path into Apple Music. For a lossless Apple-compatible container, convert to ALAC inside M4A instead.

M4A vs AAC: Same Audio, Different File Extension

An M4A file and an AAC file both contain AAC audio. The difference is the container: M4A uses the MPEG-4 container, which supports rich metadata including embedded album art, track numbers, and lyrics. Bare AAC files (.aac) carry limited metadata. Apple Music and iTunes strongly prefer M4A for library imports because the MPEG-4 container supports all the metadata fields the library uses. For most Apple ecosystem use cases, M4A is the better choice over bare AAC.
