WAV stores audio as raw linear PCM samples inside a RIFF container. Every sample from the original recording is preserved without compression, making WAV the standard for professional recording and DAW work. However, WAV was designed in the early 1990s before rich metadata was a priority. M4A: AAC Audio in an MPEG-4 Container

M4A is a file extension Apple introduced for audio-only MPEG-4 files containing AAC-encoded audio. The .m4a extension distinguishes audio-only files from video files (.mp4) sharing the same MPEG-4 container format. The container uses ISO Base Media File Format atoms for metadata — the same system used by iTunes, Apple Music, and every Apple device. This gives M4A rich, standardised metadata support that WAV fundamentally lacks.

M4A vs AAC: Container vs Codec

A bare .aac file is just a raw AAC bitstream — no container, limited metadata support, and not all players handle seeking correctly. An .m4a file wraps the same AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, adding a proper metadata structure, random-access seeking, and gapless playback support. M4R: iPhone Ringtones Are Just Renamed M4A Files

iPhone ringtones use the .m4r file extension, but the file format is identical to .m4a. iTunes and Finder recognise .m4r files as ringtones rather than music tracks.
