Why M4A Does Not Play in Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player uses the Windows Media Foundation codec pipeline, which does not include an AAC or M4A decoder by default. Opening a .m4a file in Windows Media Player on a fresh Windows installation results in a codec error. The workaround is to install Apple's iTunes (which registers a DirectShow AAC filter system-wide), install a third-party codec pack, or convert the M4A to a format Windows plays natively — such as WMA or MP3.

Quality When Converting M4A to WMA

Both M4A and WMA are lossy formats. Converting M4A to WMA requires decoding the AAC audio from the M4A container to PCM and re-encoding it as WMA — two lossy passes in total. Some quality reduction compared to the original recording is unavoidable. At higher WMA bitrates (192 kbps and above), the quality loss is minimal and inaudible for most listeners.
