How the Calculator Works

All calculations happen in the browser with simple arithmetic, updating live as you type.

How the Calculator Works
01

Tip and Total Calculation

Tip amount = bill x (tip% / 100). Total = bill + tip amount. Per person = total / number of people. When round-up is enabled, the total is ceiled to the nearest whole dollar and the tip amount is recalculated as total - bill, so the sum always stays consistent.

Tipping Norms by Service

Restaurants in the United States: 15-20% is standard, 20-25% for excellent service. Food delivery: 15-20%, more for difficult conditions. Hair and beauty services: 15-20%. Taxis and rideshare: 10-20%. Hotel concierge or bellhop: flat dollar amount per bag or service. Tipping customs vary significantly outside the US; in Japan, tipping is uncommon and can be considered rude.

03

Round-Up Behavior

Rounding up is a common convenience when paying cash. The calculator uses Math.ceil to round the total to the next whole dollar, then derives the effective tip as total minus original bill. This means the final tip percentage will be slightly higher than the selected preset, which is always the intended outcome when rounding up.

04

Even Split Assumptions

The calculator divides the total (including tip) equally among all people. It does not support unequal splits based on individual orders. For large groups with different order sizes, the most practical approach is to calculate each sub-group separately, or use the total per person as a quick reasonable estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tip calculation work?

Tip amount = bill x (tip percentage / 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total divided by the number of people. When round-up is enabled, the total is rounded up to the nearest whole dollar and the effective tip is recalculated as total minus bill.

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 15-20% is the standard range for restaurant service, with 20-25% for excellent service. 10% is generally considered a minimum for acceptable service. Delivery services typically receive 15-20%. Tipping norms vary significantly by country.

Can I split the bill among multiple people?

Yes. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage, then set the number of people splitting the bill. The calculator shows each person's equal share of the tip-inclusive total. The split assumes an even division.

What does the round-up option do?

When round-up is enabled, the total is ceiled to the nearest whole dollar. The tip amount is then shown as the difference between the rounded total and the original bill. This is useful for cash payments where you want a clean round number.

Can I calculate tips for services other than restaurants?

Yes. The calculator works for any service where tipping is customary. Common examples include hair and beauty services (15-20%), taxis and rideshare (10-20%), food delivery (15-20%), hotel staff (flat dollar amount per service), and spa treatments.

What if my group wants to split unequally?

The calculator assumes an even split. For unequal splits based on individual orders, the most practical approach is to use the calculator separately for each person's sub-total, or treat the equal per-person result as a quick approximation.
