Why does my DAW not open Opus files directly?

Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, and most other professional DAWs do not include an Opus decoder in their standard audio import pipeline. Opus is a streaming codec that these tools were not designed to read. Converting to WAV first produces a file every DAW accepts natively without any third-party plugin.

Does converting Opus to WAV improve audio quality?

No. Converting Opus to WAV does not restore quality lost during the original Opus encoding. The WAV contains exactly what FFmpeg decoded from the Opus stream — no better, no worse than the Opus source. The benefit of WAV is that all subsequent editing and re-exporting introduces at most one additional quality penalty, rather than compounding on top of the existing Opus encoding.

Why is the WAV file much larger than the Opus?

Opus uses aggressive lossy compression to achieve very small file sizes. WAV stores uncompressed PCM data, which is 10 to 20 times larger. A 4-minute stereo Opus file at 96 kbps is roughly 2.8 MB; the same audio as WAV at 44.1 kHz stereo 16-bit is around 40 MB. This size difference is normal and expected.

Can I use the WAV with iZotope RX for noise reduction?

Yes. iZotope RX accepts WAV as its primary input format. Load the converted WAV into RX for spectral repair, voice de-noise, reverb reduction, de-essing, and any other restoration process. RX requires uncompressed PCM to perform accurate analysis, which is why converting Opus to WAV before opening in RX is necessary.

Does the WAV preserve the sample rate from the Opus file?

Yes. FFmpeg preserves the original sample rate and channel layout when decoding Opus to WAV. If the Opus file was recorded at 48 kHz stereo, the output WAV will be 48 kHz stereo. You can optionally resample in your DAW if the project requires a different sample rate.

Is there a file size limit?
