PNG was created in 1996 specifically to replace the GIF format after CompuServe introduced licensing fees for GIF's LZW compression algorithm. The format's name was playfully chosen as a recursive acronym: "PNG's Not GIF." Unlike WebP (developed by Google in 2010), PNG wasn't designed for the web initially but for offline image editing. Interestingly, PNG supports up to 48-bit true color compared to WebP's 24-bit limitation, allowing for billions more possible colors. Technical Insight
When converting WebP to PNG, an interesting technical challenge emerges from their different compression methods.
