Did You Know?
The JPEG format was created in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (hence the name) and revolutionized digital photography.
Before JPEG, uncompressed images could be 10-15 times larger, making digital photography impractical for consumers.
Interestingly, NASA initially resisted using JPEGs for space imagery due to compression artifacts, but eventually adopted modified JPEG algorithms for transmitting images from Mars rovers, reducing transmission times from days to hours.
Despite being over 30 years old, JPEG remains the most popular image format worldwide, with an estimated 10 billion new JPEG images created daily.
Technical Insight
JPEG compression works by exploiting limitations in human vision using a technique called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
The algorithm divides images into 8×8 pixel blocks and discards high-frequency information that our eyes are less sensitive to.
What many don't realize is that JPEG uses two distinct compression methods: lossy DCT compression and lossless Huffman encoding.
The quality setting (1-100) specifically controls the quantization tables that determine how much high-frequency data is discarded.
Interestingly, quality settings above 90 often increase file size dramatically while providing minimal visual improvement, which is why professional photographers typically use quality settings between 70-85 for optimal size-to-quality ratio.
