AVIF was developed by the Alliance for Open Media and first released in 2019, making it significantly newer than WebP (2010). While WebP was created by Google, AVIF has backing from major tech companies including Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Netflix. Interestingly, AVIF can achieve up to 50% better compression than WebP while maintaining similar visual quality. Despite being newer, AVIF already has support in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, reaching over 75% of global web users as of 2023.

AVIF's superior compression comes from its foundation in the AV1 video codec, which was designed to succeed VP9 (WebP's foundation). AVIF supports 10-bit and 12-bit color depths compared to WebP's 8-bit limitation, allowing for more vibrant HDR images. It also features better alpha transparency handling and more efficient chroma subsampling. One technical challenge with AVIF is its higher encoding complexity, requiring more processing power to create images, though decoding is relatively efficient. This makes AVIF ideal for "encode once, decode many times" scenarios like web content delivery.
