Does converting AAC to M4A change the audio quality?
No. When the source is a raw AAC file, FFmpeg wraps the bitstream in an MPEG-4 container without decoding or re-encoding the audio. Every audio sample in the M4A is bit-for-bit identical to the original AAC. The conversion changes only the file container, not any audio data.
Why does iTunes not import my raw AAC file?
iTunes expects audio in a container format it recognizes — primarily M4A (MPEG-4 audio) or MP3. Raw ADTS AAC files (.aac) lack the container structure iTunes uses to read metadata and manage library entries. Converting to M4A adds the MPEG-4 container that iTunes requires, allowing the file to import correctly and display metadata.
Is M4A the same as AAC?
M4A is a container; AAC is a codec. An M4A file is an MPEG-4 container holding AAC-encoded audio inside it. A raw .aac file is the AAC bitstream on its own without any container. They contain the same audio data, but M4A adds the container layer that Apple applications need for library management, metadata, and playback. Renaming an .m4a to .aac removes the container — and most Apple apps then reject it.
